Espressionism

from Saturday 24 September 2011 up to Sunday 4 March 2012

One hundred expressionistic art works have been brought together for the first time in Italy, at Villa Manin in Passariano di Codroipo (Udine), in an exhibition which contrasts two fundamental movements of European expressionism dating to the beginning of the twentieth century.

The exhibition “Expressionism” is being held in Villa Manin in Passariano di Codroipo (Udine) as part of long-running project of “European Geographies”. There are over a hundred works on loan from various museums in Europe and especially from Germany.
Paintings and drawings document the main stylistic stages of the two artistic movements on exhibit:  “Die Brücke” (The Bridge) and “Der Blaue Reiter” (The Blue Rider). Their fundamental differences are brought to life through a direct comparison which highlights their unique  characteristics. Together with Fauves, these expressionist works represent one of the avanguard movements which experimented with colour and which, inspired by the works of Van Gogh and Gauguin, influenced twentieth century painting.
Instead of a faithful portrayal of external reality, audacious colours and stylised, non-conventional images portray the inner experiences and feelings of individual subjects. In “Die Brücke”, objects are freed from academic conventions, in “Der Blaue Reiter” paintings express spiritual convictions and a pantheistic vision of the world.
